Dennis Fleitz (b. 2001), the youngest in a family of six musicians, draws inspiration from a home brimming with the sounds of musical theater, classical piano, and jazz. This rich musical upbringing shapes his artistic journey, fueling his passion for expanding the boundaries of musical expression.
Currently, Dennis is pursuing his MM in Performance at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, studying under Alan Stepansky. He serves as principal cellist of the Peabody Conductor’s Orchestra and has held the principal position in the Peabody Symphony in several cycles. He previously earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Central Florida, studying with David Bjella, where he was awarded the Dr. Gale Sperry Music Scholarship, the Dr. Marilyn W. Whistler Award, and the Presser Award.
Dennis has garnered numerous accolades. Recent achievements include second prize at the national level of the 2024 MTNA competition, having previously secured first place as a representative for Florida and the Southern Division of the United States. The national judges praised his performance as “sensitive and colorful” with “terrific virtuosity and showmanship.” He also achieved second prize at the 2023 UCF Concerto/Aria Competition and first prize at the 2022 Beth Mason Young Artists Competition, which gave him the opportunity to perform Haydn Cello Concerto No. 2 with the Lakeland Symphony Orchestra. Dennis has been in masterclasses with renowned artists, including Yumi Kendall, Inbal Segev, Melissa Kraut, David Ying, Ran Dank, and the award-winning Brentano Quartet.
Dennis’ love for performance, brought upon by the love of bringing joy to others, doesn’t stop at playing cello. His unique musical upbringing has encouraged him to explore other outlets including composing and singing. His passion for composing has lead to successful commissions from a variety of parties including but not limited to the UCF Cello Choir and a wedding in Denmark. Song-writing is his favorite hobby, but beyond music Dennis enjoys playing video games, working out, bowling, penny-boarding, and cherishing moments with family.
